About this project

This project is the foundations for the Native American Thriving Initiatives' (NATI) public education pieces. In order to transform an institution to a place that is not only welcoming, but is affirming to the lives, experiences and histories of Native American people the institution must be a place where its students, faculty and staff understand the history of the place that they inhabit and benefit from.

Part of a broader public education effort, this website is a resource to help our campus community and the public understand and acknowledge the original people, landscapes and language of the East Bay. While the University of California, and UC Berkeley have grown a culture and community where Berkeley exists, this is and has always been the homeland of Indigenous people. To understand, recognize and respect the language, landscape and lives of the original people of the land, who have never left, enriches the experience and understanding of those who live and learn on this land.

This website is part of a larger partnership with the 'ottoy Initiative. The goal is to provide visibility about East Bay Ohlone people, with a focus on the present.
